What is unfiltered wine?

Unfiltered wine is a wine that has not undergone the filtration process. Filtration is a winemaking technique that's used to remove solid particles from the juice, such as sediment and bits of grape skin. It often removes proteins, phenols, and tannins suspended in the liquid.

Some winemakers believe that filtration can strip a wine of these flavour-altering compounds as well as its aroma, flavour and colour. Others, meanwhile, believe that it can help to improve a wine's stability and clarity. At Doom Juice Wine, we’re part of the former movement, which is just one reason why our funky wine tastes so refreshingly different from everything else on the market.

How are our wines made?

Doom Juice Wine unfiltered wines are made with grapes that have been crushed and left to ferment with their skins, seeds, and stems intact. This method of production results in wines that are usually darker in colour and fuller-bodied than filtered wines. Our range of Doom Juice Wines – regardless of whether they’re hazy wines or cloudy wines – are in part known for their unique appearance.

How long does it take to create one of our wines?

It takes around 4 to 6 weeks to create an unfiltered wine. This is because the wine is left in contact with the yeast and grape skins for a longer period of time, which gives it a hazy appearance and greater flavour.

This means that it takes significantly longer to produce an unfiltered wine. The main reason for this is that the process of making an unfiltered wine requires more time and effort. The grapes must be crushed by hand, and then the juice must be left to settle.
